Safe AI Habits for Children
At What Age Should Children Start Using AI?
हिंदी में पढ़ेंThere is no single age rule for every AI product. Check the service's current terms, the activity and the child's readiness. An adult demonstrating a simple learning activity is different from a child independently creating and using an account. Being in a particular class does not automatically make an account permitted.
A Class 5 child wants help making a story. Rather than entering a false birth date to create an account, the parent checks the rules and, where permitted, operates the tool while the child suggests characters on paper. The learning activity does not require the child to have a personal login.
What is a current ChatGPT example?
OpenAI says ChatGPT is not meant for children under 13, and users aged 13–18 require parental consent. In an educational context involving under-13s, the actual interaction must be conducted by an adult. This is not permission to hand an adult account to a younger child for independent use. Other services may have different or stricter rules, including restrictions for particular features. Recheck the official terms when choosing a tool; school enrolment, parental enthusiasm or a free plan does not override them.
What can younger children do?
Use parent-led activities that do not need a child account: discuss a picture story, sort objects or compare a real observation with a simple explanation. Let the adult enter fictional, non-sensitive prompts and review the output before sharing it.
If the provider's rules do not permit the intended use, choose an offline activity or another suitable school-approved resource. Do not bypass restrictions with false details.
How does readiness differ from age?
Ask whether the child can recognise that AI is not a person, keep personal information private and ask for help when a reply feels wrong. A child may be old enough for an account but still need close guidance.
UNESCO's education guidance emphasises human-centred and age-appropriate use. This is educational guidance, not a local legal permission or a guarantee that a particular product is safe. AI-S09: Read the source
When should we pause or stop?
Stop if the activity causes distress, encourages secrecy, interferes with sleep or replaces ordinary play and relationships. Avoid companion-style interactions as a shortcut to emotional support.
Agree on the purpose before opening the tool and close it when the task is complete. Revisit the decision as the child grows and the product changes. A child who learns through books, people and hands-on activities is not missing an essential requirement merely because the family delays AI accounts.
