Data Privacy & Personal Safety
What Happens to the Information You Share with AI?
हिंदी में पढ़ेंWhat happens to an AI conversation depends on the product, account and settings. Messages may be stored, reviewed for safety or used to improve models under the provider's rules. “Not used for training” does not automatically mean “never stored.” Check each of these questions separately before sharing information.
Consider a parent who turns off model training and then uploads a named medical report. The training choice does not make the report suitable for a general chatbot. The service may still process or retain it under other rules. Describing a general learning question without the report avoids that exposure.
Where does an AI message go?
Usually the app sends it to the provider's systems to produce a response. A feature may also contact another service, for example through an external tool or a link you choose. Different organisations may then have different privacy rules.
Ask four separate questions: Is the input stored? Who may access it? Is it used for improvement or training? How can I delete it? If the policy does not answer clearly, keep personal information out.
What is a current ChatGPT example?
OpenAI explains that use of data for model improvement differs between individual services and managed business offerings. Individual users have controls to opt out of training on new conversations; providing feedback can allow the associated conversation to be used even after opting out. Read the rule for the account actually being used. AI-S24: Read the source
This is a product-specific example, not a promise about every AI app. Human review, sharing, retention and training are different issues. A school's purchased product may have a different agreement from a parent's personal account.
Is temporary chat the same as no storage?
No. OpenAI's current Temporary Chat guidance says those conversations are not used to improve models while temporary, but a safety copy may be kept for up to 30 days. Saving a chat changes its status; available personalisation choices also matter. AI-S05: Read the source
Do not interpret “temporary” as permission to share passwords, intimate images or children's identity documents. Settings and interfaces can change, so open the linked official guidance rather than relying on an old screenshot.
What can families do in practice?
Use fictional names, small examples and only the minimum non-sensitive text needed. Review chat history, sharing links and app permissions together. If something was shared accidentally, use deletion and support controls and take separate action for exposed passwords or financial access.
A useful household question is: “Would I still be comfortable sending this if a service stored a copy?” If not, seek help through the relevant teacher, official office or qualified professional instead.

OpenAI
Where to look: Individual services, opt-out, feedback and managed services
How it was checked: Official text retrieved
A product-specific example; not a policy for every AI app. Retention, human access, model training and shared links are separate issues.
- AI-S05: Temporary chat in ChatGPT
OpenAI
Where to look: Temporary chat, personalization, saving and retention
How it was checked: Official text retrieved
While temporary, not used for model improvement; safety copy may be kept up to 30 days. Saving changes its status; existing personalization may be used when chosen.
