How much homework and bag weight is right for your child?

हिंदी में पढ़ें

National guidance recommends no homework up to Class 2, up to two hours a week for Classes 3–5, and up to one hour a day for Classes 6–8, across all subjects together. It also recommends a bag around 10% of the child’s body weight. These are recommendations; ask how the school applies current directions and discuss any difficulty.

For example, three subjects each have a “small” task, but together they take the whole evening. Note the total time and where your child needs help. Share that picture with the teachers so the conversation is about the full workload.

What should you know about these numbers?

The homework timings come from the School Bag Policy 2020. They refer to the total work, so the weekly or daily recommendation is not a separate allowance for each subject. S17: School Bag Policy S18: Homework and bag guidance

The Ministry’s summary also describes the bag-weight recommendation. For example, 10% of 20 kg is 2 kg. This is a way to understand the suggested figure, not a medical safety certificate. A child who finds a bag painful or uncomfortable needs attention even if it falls within that figure. Check the load, speak to the school and seek appropriate help. S18: Homework and bag guidance

How can you make the school bag lighter?

Check the next day’s timetable together. Remove books that are not required and ask the school which materials can remain in class. Avoid adding reference books “just in case” without checking whether they are used.

If the timetable changes frequently, ask how the school will communicate the required materials. A family cannot reliably reduce a bag when it has to guess which subject will be taught.

Do not use the 10% figure as a reason to add weight up to a limit. If the child finds the bag uncomfortable or painful, discuss the load and seek appropriate help rather than treating the figure as a certificate of safety.

How can you spot what is making homework difficult?

Keep a brief record of assigned tasks and the time actually spent, including where the child needed help. The purpose is to identify a problem, not to watch the clock competitively.

What small changes can your family try?

  • Pack from the timetable and written school instructions.
  • Distinguish essential materials from optional extras.
  • Ask teachers about repeated copying or unusually long tasks.
  • Keep time for rest, play and ordinary family conversation.
  • Discuss persistent difficulty or discomfort privately with the school.

These household suggestions are optional. They do not create a new official timetable or a substitute medical assessment.

What should you check with the school?

Ask which government/state/board directions apply and how the school implements them. The article explains national recommendations; it does not announce that a specific school has abolished homework or certify its bag weights.

What else might you want to know?

Does “no homework” mean a young child cannot hear a story at home?

Voluntary shared reading and conversation are different from compulsory written assignments. Keep the experience enjoyable rather than turning it into a daily performance test.

Should parents finish a project to meet the deadline?

Ask the teacher what the child is expected to do independently and explain difficulties early. A polished adult-made product can hide the help the child needs.
