Learning at home
How can you help your child read and count at home?
हिंदी में पढ़ेंStart with a short story, a conversation and everyday objects to count. Ask your child to explain what happened in the story or show how many objects there are. This helps you see understanding as well as memorisation. NIPUN Bharat focuses on these early reading and number skills; ask the teacher for practice that suits your child.
For example, ask your child to put out four cups for the family. If one more person joins, ask how many cups are needed now. Let the child move and count the cups. You can have a useful learning conversation without buying a special kit.
What is NIPUN Bharat trying to help children learn?
NIPUN Bharat is a national effort around basic reading, understanding and maths. These are sometimes called “foundational literacy and numeracy,” meaning the early skills children build on in later classes.
The Ministry’s July 2026 reply describes the target at the end of Class 2 and discusses preparation through play. Older launch material spoke of a Class 3 target by 2026–27. That explains why you may see different wording in older notices. These are programme targets, rather than a pass/fail test for your child or proof that the national goal has already been achieved. What simple activities can you try?
Try the ideas below if they suit your child. They are optional home activities, not a compulsory homework timetable.
For preschool children, talk about a picture, sort familiar objects and play with sounds in names or songs. Let the child ask questions and describe what they notice. An adult can write down a story the child tells without requiring the child to copy a page.
For Classes 1–2, read a short passage together. Ask who was involved and what happened, then invite the child to explain in a familiar language. Count objects and change the quantity so the child can show what adding or taking away means.
For a child in a higher class who needs support, use respectful, age-appropriate situations. Planning the number of cups for visitors or reading a simple set of game instructions can reveal a useful starting point. Do not make the child perform publicly to prove a difficulty.
How can you see whether your child understands?
If a child says there are eight objects, ask how they counted. If they read a story, ask which detail helped them understand it. You are looking for a conversation, not trying to catch a mistake.
How can you work with the teacher?
- Ask which skill the class is practising now.
- Request one suitable activity or reading level.
- Share a brief observation and an example of the child’s work.
- Agree when to review progress.
- Ask for additional support when the difficulty continues.
What should you check with the school?
The school’s learning outcomes, language support and classroom materials should guide practice. Do not treat a government mission target as a diagnosis, a universal timed reading test or a rule requiring paid tuition.
What else might you want to know?
Do we need an expensive kit?
Start with available stories, pictures and everyday objects. Ask the teacher what is suitable before buying material.
What if the child is already in Class 6?
Support can still begin. Ask for a discreet plan that connects foundational practice with the child’s current interests and classwork.
