School records & IDs
What is a PEN number, and why does it matter?
हिंदी में पढ़ेंA PEN is a student identification number used in the government’s school-record system, UDISE+. It helps schools identify a child’s education record. It is different from a class roll number, APAAR ID or Aadhaar. If a form asks for it, start by asking the school office to check your child’s existing record.
For example, your child moves from Class 3 in one school to Class 4 in another. The new school gives a different roll number. Ask it to find the existing education record before assuming the child needs a new one.
How is PEN different from a roll number?
PEN stands for Permanent Education Number. UDISE+ is the government system that keeps information about schools and students. Think of a roll number as the number used in a particular class, while PEN helps identify the student’s education record in that system. The school itself has a separate UDISE code. How can you check your child’s existing record?
Ask the office to check whether your child already has a student record and to explain which identifier appears on it. Keep the reply with the child’s report cards and admission papers. Do not assume that a number is wrong simply because the new school uses a different admission number.
If two records appear, ask the school office to check why. Let authorised staff use their official help process. Do not guess which record to delete or change a genuine birth date just to get past a search error.
What can you do now?
- Compare the child’s name, date of birth, class and previous school with reliable documents.
- Ask whether the difficulty is a missing record, an incorrect detail, a transfer issue or a temporary portal problem.
- Request a written acknowledgement when you submit a correction.
- Keep copies privately; share them only through the school’s designated channel.
- Ask what can proceed while the record is being checked.
The office can explain the steps available now and how long a correction may take. The suggestions here do not promise a particular online button or completion date.
What should you check with the school?
The school’s authorised staff must confirm the current UDISE+ process, any state instructions and the who to contact if the problem continues. This article does not establish an all-India PEN deadline or make PEN a condition for every admission.
What else might you want to know?
Is PEN the same as APAAR or Aadhaar?
Treat them as separate identifiers. Ask the school which one a form requests instead of copying the same number into every field.
Should I pay an online agent to locate it?
Begin with the school. Do not submit the child’s identity documents, passwords or one-time passwords to an unfamiliar service offering a quick result.
What should I bring to the office?
Bring the previous school’s available papers and your correction request. Ask for the exact list before carrying original documents, and take originals back after any authorised verification.
